The Bloody Lady and Other Works by Viktor Kubal

THE BLOODY LADY is the centerpiece of Viktor Kubal: Father of Slovak Animation, a retrospective of the landmark Eastern Bloc animator’s pioneering work in much-loved children’s shorts as well as subversive, though no less ground-breaking, feature films. Widely considered one of Slovak animation’s crown jewels, THE BLOODY LADY is an improbable and bewitching fusion of gothic horror and classic children’s animation, retelling of the infamous Čachtická castle and Báthory folk tale which is often cited as the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Recently treated to a haunting live score by celebrated indie musician Claire Rousay, this underseen gem is a new cult classic in the making.

Burke & Hare

Two of the most notorious figures in the history of medicine, William Burke and William Hare were a pair of enterprising street thugs who provided anatomical specimens to the Edinburgh Medical College—often by robbing the graves of the recently dead, sometimes through even more nefarious methods. Derren Nesbitt and Glynn Edwards bring these two scoundrels to life in Burke & Hare, a colorful, early-’70s rendition of life in the taverns, brothels and surgical theatres of 1820s Scotland. While other filmmakers have treated the Burke and Hare murders as a source of Gothic horror, director Vernon Sewell (The Blood Beast Terror) offers a playful spin on the Irish body snatchers, blending dark comedy with bawdy eroticism, seasoning it with the grotesque, then crowning it with a playful theme song by the pop band The Scaffold.

Good Earth

While struggling with VROP Disorder, Ryan finds solace in a revolutionary search engine, Good Earth, which blurs the lines between digital and physical worlds. As he seeks to be its savior, he questions reality itself.

Into the Deep

Scout Taylor Compton and Richard Dreyfuss star in this action packed thriller where modern day pirates on the hunt for sunken drugs kidnap a boat of tourists and force them to dive into shark infested waters to retrieve the contraband!

The Knight Knifer

Dane discovers this isn’t just a one-man Ren Faire rampage, Dick Dane uncovers a chilling connection between the knight’s bloody rampage and a centuries-old curse. Can he outsmart the medieval madman? Or will Los Angeles become the bloody battleground of The Knight Knifer?

Mabuse Lives! Dr Mabuse At CCC: 1960-1964

Fritz Lang made two of the defining works of early German cinema with Dr Mabuse the Gambler and The Testament of Dr Mabuse, two masterpieces centred on Norbert Jacques’ nefarious literary supervillain. In 1960, Lang was charged by Artur Brauner’s CCC Film with making a third crime thriller centred on the infamous Dr Mabuse, completing a trilogy nearly forty years in the making. A huge success, The Thousand Eyes of Dr Mabuse gave CCC the confidence to launch into an entire series focused on the master criminal between 1960 and 1964, all starring Wolfgang Priess in the title role. All six films are presented here alongside a wealth of new and archival extras. The Masters of Cinema series is honoured to collect all six of the 1960s Mabuse films together in this set, presented in high definition from 2K restorations and available for the first time on Blu-ray in the US.
