Perpetual horror movie victm Charles Dutton (below left) has another shot to die in the upcoming Legion, or as I like to call it Attack of the Killer Angels, which hits theaters on January 22, 2010. Potential fodder -- judging by the framing of the photo below -- also includes Tyrese Gibson (below right).
October 26:
Minor Saw VI Spoiler Alert!...Continue below if you want to see if Tanedra lived or died, as well as the fate of none other than Darius McCrary (Family Matters), who I didn't even realize was in the film before I saw it...
Tanedra survived Scream Queens, and she survived Saw VI too ! Granted, not in one piece. Still, knowing how the Saw series likes to bring back characters, you may very well see her again. Not so lucky is Darius McCrary, who is unceremoniously shot to hell. R.I.P. Eddie Winslow.
October 19:
Hey, it's a black slasher villain! Huzzah! This trailer has been around for a while, but it looks like finally The Whistler is being released on DVD this week! It's about a big black lumberjack (!) who returns from the dead to whup ass. Visual evidence below.
We've got our first look at Scream Queens winner Tanedra in the upcoming Saw VI, and by the looks of things, she doesn't fare too well. But that goes without saying. Judging from that head gear, I'd advise her to upgrade her HMO.
Apparently, there is talk of there being a Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde adaptation with 50 Cent and Forest Whitaker (I'll let you figure out which is which). That would be at least the third black version of the tale, following Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I can't decide whether this would be too below Whitaker or too above 50 Cent. My advice: RUN, FOREST, RUN!!!
Thanks to Christopher for pointing me to this blog post for movie posters from Ghana. I gotta say, there's some perverse appeal to these grotesque interpretations of American movies, which tend to add a bit of melanin to the main characters (see Dolly Dearest below), although Children of the Corn III -- the only one in the post with black characters -- strangely shows none in the poster.
August 16:
Looks like Black Devil Doll finally has a DVD date: October 27! Prepare to be eye raped.
And check out the soundtrack! I hear "Anal Puppet" is the jam! Check out more at blackdevildoll.com.
August 4:
With the upcoming Wolf Man remake being delayed to 2010, its November 6 slot was recently assigned by Universal to a thriller called The 4th Kind. I wasn't familiar with it, so I looked it up on IMDb, and lo and behold, it's writtend and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi (below, left), the guy behind the decent direct-to-video flick The Cavern! Someone's movin' on up to the East Side! The 4th Kind stars genre go-to gal Milla Jovovich, and the plot -- NOT a sequel to Close Encounters (sorry, fanboys) -- concerns a bunch of unexplained disappearances in a small Alaska town. Aliens? Vampires? Hoodlum seals? We'll have to tune in to find out...
July 22:
Orphan opens this Friday, and thanks to a sneak peek, I found out the fate of CCH Pounder...*NOT-MUCH-OF-A-SPOILER-ALERT* As Idris Elba found out in The Unborn, being a servant of God won't help a brotha or sista out when it comes to horror movies. R.I.P., Sister Abigail, we hardly knew ye. Apart from the racial genocide, though, the movie is actually pretty good.
Holy crap, we're down to the final episode of Harper's Island, and the black guy (Brandon Jay McLaren) is still alive! Could he actually survive? Could he even be the killer? Doubtful on both counts; I mean, c'mon, this is CBS (Coloreds Better Skedaddle). Still, I've surprisingly enjoyed the show. If you've missed it up 'til now, you can still catch up with episodes on CBS.com or Netflix's streaming video. Go Danny!
June 12:
The Hollywood Reporter reported this week that Brittany Murphy has been cast in the upcoming "psychological thriller" Something Wicked, which wouldn't be of relevence to this site except that it's directed by Darin Scott (pictured below left with Rusty Cundieff). Scott co-wrote The Offspring and Tales from the Hood, plus non-horror urban fare like Sprung, Caught Up and Waist Deep -- in addition to producing Menace II Society, Fear of a Black Hat and, interestingly, Stepfather II. Oddly, he hasn't directed anything since 1998's Caught Up.
The distinctly non-urban Something Wicked thus seems like either a step up for Scott or a step down for Murphy, especially considering Dread Central reported last week that shooting on the film has already wrapped. Did anyone bother to tell Brittany Murphy? Even if she appears in the film, it appears like it would be an awfully small role, as the movie already has a star (Shantel VanSanten, below right).
May 26:
Two black actors headlining two horror movies in one week? Granted, they're straight-to-video, but hey, Rome wasn't integrated in a day. Cuba Gooding, Jr. stars in The Devil's Tomb as a hard-boiled military dude who fights an "ancient evil" while trying to rescue a scientist in the Middle East. DMX stars in Carnivorous (formerly Lockjaw) as a hard-boiled military dude who fights an "ancient evil" while trying to rescue a farmer in the Midwest. Have no fear, white people; Negroes to the rescue!
Thanks to Christopher for pointing out this new teaser for the upcoming movie Thorns from a Rose. Storywise, it looks like it's aiming for Halloween with a black killer -- one Robert Rose. According to the production company's website, Vivica Fox stars as Robert's mother! At first I though that she must've lost a bet, but for such a low-budget film, Rose has a pretty impressive cast, including: Tiny Lister, Tiffany Sheppis, Christa Campbell, Brian J. White, Richard Riehle, Sherman Augustus and...Cece Peniston? Finally! (Note: Vivica doesn't appear in the clip, so it remains to be seen how much she's actually in the movie.)
The New York Post is reporting that Ving Rhames has signed on to co-star in the upcoming Piranha remake (in 3-D!), the third straight remake from director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors). Let's see, he's already played a cop in Dawn of the Dead and an Army guy in Day of the Dead (below); what black authority figure type is left for him to play? A judge? A football coach? Maybe a DMV employee? Whatever the role, you can be sure that it will be bald. (Unlike Sam Jackson; who knows what's gonna be on his monkey-fighting head in any given movie?)
April 24:
I'm not sure if I'm aghast or impressed at the creativity of the censors who "cleaned up" Sam Jackson's infamous Snakes on a Plane line. The movie would've actually been more fun it had been this surreal:
MadTV had a pretty funny skit (Really!) earlier this year called "The Black Experience Hour," feauring a serious panel discussion of the pressing issue of racial profiling how black Americans can protect themselves against a zombie attack. Fast-forward to the 17:25 mark to avoid the otherwise mediocre comedy.
March 20:
CBS has a new slasher-inspired TV show premiering April 9 called Harper's Island. Basically, a group of friends gather on a small island off the coast of Seattle for a wedding, then proceed to get bumped off one by one by a mysterious killer. And yes, there is a BLACK GUY (pictured...on the left, dummy). It's Brandon Jay McLaren, who's actually survived two Sci Fi Channel horror movies -- Yeti and Hybrid -- not to mention a stint as the Red Power Ranger. Will he survive Harper's Island? Probably not, but the more pertinent question might be, will Harper's Island survive long enough to air all 13 episodes?
March 19:
Just wanted to let you all know that I'M A DADDY. My lil' son Myles was born last week on Friday the 13th at 1:13 PM (that's 13:13). In honor, I wanted to make his middle name Jason, but my wife wasn't having it. Women.
I don't like to speak -- I have the vocal chords of a small child -- so when I do, you best pay attention, 'cuz you ain't gonna hear it much. Lucky for you, a recent interview with me has been immortalized on Night of the Living Podcast. Thanks to Freddy and Chiseck for allowing me to bore them to tears for 30 minutes.
I remember seeing the poster for the movie Nightmare a few years back (it was made in 2005) and thinking, "Now, that looks interesting." Well, better late than never, IFC has picked it up and is airing the film on demand on their IFC Festival Direct until April 14. Thanks to star Jason Scott Campbell for bringing this to my attention, and he gives us a scoop: No black people die! *SPOILER ALERT* Oh, was I supposed to do that before the spoiler? My bad. For those of you who don't have access to IFC Direct, hopefully this means that a DVD release is on its way. See IFC for more details, and check out the trailer.
Michael Jackson's iconic video for "Thriller" is possibly being adapted into a Broadway play, with Jackson involved in "every aspect" of the creative process. Hopefully, that doesn't include daycare or the red leather budget. In related news, the pop star is being sued by "Thriller" director John Landis for not paying him for money made on the video overr the past four years. This, of course, begs the question, "Thriller" has made money over the past four years?
January 27:
Although it doesn't hit DVD until next week, Nite Tales is already being expanded into a regular TV series, meaning Flavor Flav will get even more time on your TV set than he probably deserves. It will be a Tales From the Crypt-style show with Flav as the host -- not necessarily must-see TV, but he can't be any worse than Tracy Morgan on Scare Tactics. Shudder. Bonus: there'll be an online contest to name Flav's character. Dibs on The Clockkeeper.
Direct-to-video sequel alert! Vacancy 2: The First Cut hits shelves this week, with two black character actors -- Arjay Smith ("The V Word") and Beau Billingsley (See Don't I Know You?) -- in tow. Based on the pics below (the white girl using Arjay as a shield), their survival is seriously in doubt. And on Obama's inauguration day, too. A damn shame.
January 15:
It's good to see that The View hasn't totally emasculated (efeminated?) Whoopi Goldberg's will to act. She's starring in, of all things, a FEARNet mini-series called Stream, about a woman who takes a drug that lets her experience multiple phases of her life -- past, present and future -- sort of like A Christmas Carol on Xanax. It begins today on FEARNet's website and airs on their VOD service on January 22.
